TRAVELLING IN ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe's well documented disastrous leadership, government policies and continued political instability have contributed to a devastated economy that has essentially destroyed the countries infrastructure. Once considered the bread basket of Africa, Zimbabwe's healthy agricultural, mining and budding tourism sectors have all but collapsed, making a journey to the country seem an unappealing prospect to most travellers. However, while the task left to the new dispensation of rescuing the country's economy is admittedly daunting, there is the glimmer of hope as political change starts to take place and investors line the borders of the country waiting to take advantage of the natural splendour and tourism potential that still exists. In some areas tourism has survived despite the turmoil, specifically in the area of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi National Park, where the strength of this African icon, the resilience of the tourism entities based in the village and the proud history of the Zimbabwe National Parks have ensured that an element of Zimbabwe's tourism is kept alive and well. With support from across the border, lodges are in impeccable condition, associated services operate efficiently and, with the Zimbabwe side being the best viewing point, the Victoria Falls are as magnificent as ever.
A personal connection to Zimbabwe and a strong empathy for a people affected by circumstances in many instances beyond their control has kept Active Africa guides returning to the country. Currently limited to the area around Victoria Falls, we have led walking tours of the falls and the village, promoted a variety of adventure activities that the area is renowned for, led walks and drives into the surrounding wilderness and utilised our intimate connection with the area to facilitate enlightening cultural exchanges.
