TRAVELLING IN BOTSWANA

The "Switzerland" of Africa, Botswana has benefited from a stable political environment and a healthy economy based on its mineral wealth and tourism assets. Essentially neglected in colonial years, effective and democratic government policy since its independence in 1966, combined with the discovery of diamonds in 1967, has resulted in one of the world's fastest growing economies. Mostly due to the bulk of the country being uninhabitable semi-arid wilderness, Botswana has one of the lowest population densities in the world - less than 3 per kmē - allowing for vast tracts of untouched wilderness and some unparalleled game viewing opportunities. The jewel in the crown has to be the Okavango Delta, an enormous, remote inland delta that offers welcome respite from the barren landscape and attracts a wealth of wild life to the area. The 5 star safari typical to southern Africa has come home to roost here - a selection of premier lodges and camps that offer surprising luxury in a remote environment accessible only by air. But Botswana is also home to the quintessential African safari, its wide open spaces one of the few places left where unrestricted exploration by 4 wheel drive can still be experienced.

Not an environment conducive to much activity outside of safari, Active Africa guides have led cross country expeditions in off road vehicles to explore the remote wilderness, led safari trips into the Okavango Delta and into the more easily accessible Chobe National Park.
